Thursday Thoughts 17.01.13

Mir Amirul Islam was a private tutor under Karaya police station in Kolkata, he set himself on fire in early December to protest against police apathy in registering a rape case.

The parents of the girl tried to register a complaint in October but were turned away by the police, then a couple of days later they registered a complaint of molestation.

A few days after Islam started to unite people against the reluctance shown by the cops, the accused’s wife (!) lodged a counter complaint against Islam, ransacking her house and taking away 1 Lakh rupee.

The police booked him, afraid that he will be falsely implicated he set himself on fire.

The police changed the charge to rape.

Now, can’t we hope for a little gratitude and humanity from police if others are doing their jobs for them? They were supposed to be protecting this guy for his selfless noble action, in place of that they let him die in a painful death! they may point the finger at the false blame of the accused’s wife, but is she the real reason?

  1. The state of affairs in Kolkata is so pathetic right now,I am wondering if the ‘change’ was worth it after all..You kow they had their faults, but Kolkata was much more incident free during Mr.Buddhadeb’s govt.
The police inaction toh has reached epic levels.

    • my area is better these days. i have dealt with police of burdwan during cpm era they were horrible! they were simply horrible! have no interest to go back and check if they have changed for better or for worse.

  2. Outrageous, and yet not surprising. it seems endemic in governments that are corrupt to have police forces dominated by a culture of repression – particularly with regard to women’s rights.
